Navigating the sprawling narrative of Baldur's Gate 3 eventually leads players to complex political dilemmas and rescue missions in the game's third act. Among the most critical figures to rescue is Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, whose fate heavily impacts the city's future and Wyll's personal quest line. Locating and successfully freeing him requires careful planning, as his position changes depending on your previous narrative choices.

Tracking the Duke to Wyrm's Crossing

Players initially encounter the high-ranking leader during Lord Enver Gortash's coronation ceremony at Wyrm's Rock Fortress. Attempting an aggressive rescue during this tense political event is highly discouraged, as the surrounding steel watch guards will swiftly overwhelm your party. Instead, players should witness the ceremony peacefully to allow the narrative to progress naturally.

Following the coronation, Gortash secretly moves the high-profile hostage to a highly secure, remote facility to maintain leverage over the city. Speaking with the devilish Mizora back at your campsite provides crucial insights into the evolving situation. She offers a pact regarding the old man's life, though clever adventurers can still save him even if they choose to break Wyll's contract entirely.

Discovering the Secret Underwater Prison

The true location of the captive leader is the Iron Throne, a top-secret underwater prison submerged deep beneath the harbor. To reach this aquatic stronghold, you must explore the lower city docks and find a hidden hatch inside the Flymm Cargo warehouse. Descending into the basement reveals a specialized submersible vehicle operated by a dwarf named Redhammer the Deviser.

Securing passage on the submarine triggers a direct confrontation with Gortash via a projection screen, who threatens to detonate the entire facility if you proceed. Disregarding his warning and docking at the prison initiates a high-stakes, turn-based survival event. You are granted a very limited number of turns to navigate the flooding corridors, release the prisoners, and return to the sub safely.

Executing the Rescue Mission Inside the Cells

Once inside the Iron Throne, players must move quickly toward the eastern wing of the facility where the noble leader is locked away. It is highly recommended to cast movement-enhancing spells like Longstrider or Haste before opening his cell doors. Pulling the wall lever releases him, but you must immediately heal his depleted health bar to prepare for an incoming ambush.

If you previously chose to break Wyll's pact, Mizora will summon explosive, fiery arachnids to eliminate the target before he can escape the corridor. Utilizing tactical abilities like Dimension Door or Sanctuary can protect him from taking fatal damage as he moves toward the central ladder. Once he successfully ascends into the submersible, you can safely steer the vessel back to the mainland to conclude the thrilling heist.
